Be still

The original intention of this blog was to discuss my thought process for the black and white photography class I was enrolled in last fall. However, after some consideration, I've decided to use this forum as a way to share my thoughts, experiences, favorite quotes and scripture verses.

"Be still and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10

This is probably my favorite verse in the bible and the one that challenges me the most. I have the hardest time "being still". Still to me is not a physical still but a mental still. I don't think that God is telling me not to be active, I feel like he is saying be still with your mind. I tend to overanalyze everything. It is part of my personality, for better or worse. I spend so much time worrying about the future...how my life will turn out, how will the decisions I make today will impact my life, my son’s life. When you think about it, a small decision you make today can completely alter the path your life will lead.  It could be something simple as choosing a different route home and avoiding a possible accident, or bigger decisions about whether to stay in a particular career or with a significant other.

I feel like in the midst of my angst, God is telling me to still my mind and trust in him.  We can’t “be still” unless we “know” that He is God.  Knowing the he is God, means I know that he is in control of my life, that he loves me and will protect me.  As Paul stated; His grace is sufficient.

My knowing that He is God takes the pressure off of my shoulders to be in control and allows Him to take over. I have spent most of my life living on my terms, deciding which path my life was going to take. Now that I look back, I realize that I would be much happier in my life today if I had let go and trusted Him years ago. I don’t claim to understand his plan for my life, but it is time for me to let go and let God. I need to simply believe and trust in him.
