Changing perspective

So after a bit of thinking and recent feedback from my fellow classmates, I believe I need to narrow and focus my theme. While I would like to capture a large comprehensive perspective of childhood and the joy it entails, for this project specifically, I plan to focus on every day occasions. I think these are the occasions that are most often taken for granted. Playing in the backyard, bubble baths, climbing trees, etc. What I love about children is that they don't require a great deal of material possessions, a cardboard box and some crayons magically becomes a castle and with two sticks and duel can occur.

I have uploaded two new contact sheets. I am excited about a few of these pictures, in particular the ones on the rope swing and the little girls climbing the fence.

State Fair

The State Fair is one of my favorite childhood memories. It's a place where funnel cakes and candy apples abound. You can see the bearded lady, the fire-eating man and ride the scrambler until you regret the deep fried Twinkies you just inhaled. Not much compares to the energy and excitement of the pot-belly pig races and the second-rate Elvis impersonator singing his heart out. My fondest memory of the fair occurred during my freshman year in high school. A group of us were dropped off by our parents, since this outing preceded our drivers licenses. We made our way through the animals, viewed the largest pumpkin grown in the state and consumed enough food to feed a small nation. Our rebellious side emerged when we all lined up for fake tattoos. But the best part of that evening was the Ferris Wheel and holding hands with the cute boy next to me. I think it is moments like these that we all remember and cherish. The innocence of childhood crushes and the belief in forever and always, life before your heart was ever broken.

I took my son to the fair this weekend, in an effort to capture some of these moments...children immersed in their cotton candy and the navigating through the house of mirrors. We had a blast on the carousel and petting the pigs. However, I will admit that the first challenging aspect of my theme emerged. Not all parents are thrilled with the idea of me taking pictures of their kids. My goal is to capture an assortment of children at different phases of their lives. This may prove to be more difficult than I originally imagined. In the next week or so I will upload a few of the photos from my first attempt.
